Bhavacakra Thangka - 真丝, 金 - 尼泊尔 - 藏语
Finely painted in mineral pigments on cloth, the thangka depicting the Bhavacakra or Wheel of Life, symbolising the Buddhist view of samsara and the cycles of rebirth. At the centre of the wheel are the three poisons, pig, snake, and rooster, surrounded by the six realms of existence, each carefully rendered with rich detail. The outer ring illustrates the twelve links of dependent origination. The entire composition is held within the jaws of Yama, the Lord of Death, his fierce expression surmounted by a third eye. The scene is bordered with floral motifs and set within a golden brocade mount.
Such thangkas served as teaching tools within monasteries, illustrating the moral and philosophical underpinnings of Buddhist practice. This example, painted in Nepal in the 20th century, demonstrates vibrant colouration and a finely preserved surface.
