Jugend. Münchner illustrierte Wochenschrift für Kunst und Leben - 4 issues - 1897-1898

Set of 4 JUGEND magazines. Münchner illustrierte Wochenschrift für Kunst und Leben - Georg Hirth's Verlag in Munich & Leipzig. - July 24, 1897, No. 30, cover illustrator (chromolithography) Ludwig Raders. - September 4, 1897, No. 36, cover illustrator (chromolithography) Otto Eckmann. - October 16, 1897, No. 42, cover illustration (photoreproduction) taken from 'Dedica' Op. X by Max Klinger. - September 17, 1898, No. 38, cover illustration (chromolithography) Fritz Erler. Few magazines can boast of having contributed to the birth of an artistic movement; the magazine JUGEND, towards the end of the 19th century, coined the term Jugendstil, the German equivalent of Art Nouveau for France and Liberty for Italy. Founded by journalist and publisher Georg Hirth, it began publishing in 1896 in Munich, quickly establishing itself with a modernist and provocative approach towards official art. Many artists participated in the venture; today we remember Franz von Stuck, Max Klinger, Otto Greiner, Hans Christiansen, Joseph Rudolph Witzel, Walther Georgi, Angelo Jank, Otto Eckmann, Fidus, Adolf Munzer, Fritz Erler, Leo Putz, Ludwig von Zumbusch, and many others. References: Hans H. Hofstatter, Jugendstil and Art Nouveau. Graphic Works, Albin Michel edition, Paris, 1985, pp. 132, 133, 162-176.
