A similar piece was featured in the Nagoya City Museum. https://www.museum.city.nagoya.jp/exhibition/special/past/tenji170422.html The lower part of the ship is divided into three sections. At the centre sits a lidded box adorned with exquisite cherry blossom inlay in mother-of-pearl. In Japanese culture, cherry blossoms symbolise the fleeting beauty of life, capturing the essence of seasonal change and renewal. Above this box rests a windowed compartment, which opens on both sides to reveal ten small lacquered plates and an additional lidded box. The fabric blinds inside the windows are decorated with traditional landscape paintings. Please note: the blinds show heavy wear, including tears, insect holes, and peeling. Some of the wooden window frames are loose or detached, with visible signs of past repairs using adhesive. To the rear of the ship, on one side, is another lidded container. Positioned at the top centre is a sake container with a handle, decorated with elegant clematis flower designs in mother-of-pearl inlay. The clematis is known in Japanese art as a symbol of beauty and ingenuity, often associated with poetic imagery. The handle, spout, and sides are finished with finely sprinkled mother-of-pearl powder, creating a luxurious nashiji effect. The exterior sides of the ship are decorated in maki-e, with dynamic wave patterns painted in gold and silver powder over lacquer. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese technique in which metallic powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to form intricate, shimmering motifs. There are multiple signs of ageing and wear, including surface abrasions, scratches, discolouration, lacquer loss, splits in the wood, and one missing bottom peg from the base of the ship. Please inspect the photos carefully to assess the condition. Dimensions: approx. H 35.5 cm W 57 cm D 21 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
