Superb and very rare aztec figure of Quetzalcoatl. A carved medium bluish-green fuchsite stone pendant depicting the god with his arms folded over his chest, hands clasping his shoulders. Wearing a snake head headdress, wich covers his head and back. Drilled suspension hole through his navel. Original matte polished surface with areas of deposits. Aztec, Mexico. Quetzalcoatls is the ancient feathered serpent god. One of the first dragon-like gods known to man. The Maya knew him as Kukulkan; the Quiche as Gukumatz. In Mesoamerica , Peru, and by the Aztec's he was known as Quetzacoatl. This ancient diety was a powerful and prolific one .He was known as the inventor of books and the calendar, the giver of maize corn to mankind, and sometime as a symbol of death and resurrection.
