Tantō signed “Bishū Osafune Yokoyama Sukemune”, dated February 1862 (Edo period). This refined short blade was forged by Yokoyama Sukemune, a smith belonging to the prestigious Osafune school of Bizen Province, one of the most respected sword-making traditions in Japan. Sukemune was among the last active masters of the Yokoyama lineage, descending from the renowned Yokoyama Sukesada family, preserving the Bizen-den techniques during the closing years of the Edo era. The blade measures 19.8 cm, showing a well-defined notare-midare hamon (gentle wave pattern), beautifully balanced with a bright nioiguchi and a finely forged itame-hada. The kissaki is well-shaped, demonstrating excellent craftsmanship consistent with the Yokoyama tradition. The nakago bears a clear signature with natural patina and one mekugi-ana. The sword rests in its original shirasaya, which features a complete sayagaki (inscription) describing the smith, date, and evaluation by the appraiser. It comes accompanied by its official torokusho from Okayama Prefecture (No. 60486), confirming its authenticity and registration. This tantō by Yokoyama Sukemune is a representative example of late Edo craftsmanship, bridging classical Bizen aesthetics with the refined artistry of the Yokoyama lineage. The shirasaya mount preserves and highlights the minimalist beauty of the piece.
