ABOUT THE ARTIST: Johan Karlgren, Aka Pappas Pärlor, is a Swedish artist with long golden hair and a strong mustache. He creates interactive street-art using old school iron perler bead fun and describes himself as a full time artist, part time hoarder of awesome crap. He started using this unusual medium when he became a father and equally shared parental duties of taking care of the little ones. This provided him with the opportunity to fully reconnect with his "child soul" in every aspect and develop furhter his personal style. Johan’s works are inspired by vintage lifestyles and pop culture, including video games, movies, cartoons, and music. The streets and urban environment become the canvas of a beautiful and constantly (re)imagined 2D retro game. Blurring the lines between the pixelated and organic worlds, experiencing one of Pappas' pieces in the wild is always an exciting moment. You almost always find yourself on your hands and knees, looking to capture that perfect shot. ABOUT THE ARTWORK: The beauty of icons is that the human brain is able to rebuild an image from an outline or a few colored squares. This minimalist approach does not work for everything, but on the occasion of Women's Day 2022, Pappas Pärlor explored how the iconic 'We Can Do It!' would look if created in a 15 x 32-pixel frame inside a 64RGB world and blown up into a 50 x 70 cm portrait. 'We Can Do It' is an American wartime poster produced by J. Howard Miller in 1943 for Westinghouse Electric as an inspirational image to boost female worker morale. Rediscovered in the early 1980s, it was widely reproduced in many forms. The image was used to promote feminism and other political issues. It made the cover of Smithsonian magazine in 1994 and was fashioned into a US first-class mail stamp in 1999. This print is our favourite reinterpretation of the iconic poster to date, with a very unique and powerful take on one of the important image of our popular (Western) culture, that also helped raise awareness around gender equality and universal rights. Playful, simple, yet bold and impactful, we hope this artwork will find a place in your home or your work interior, inspiring you and others, and helping define your own personal style. STREET-ART MOVEMENT: Pappas Pärlor belongs to the wide and ever growing Street-Art mouvement that originated in the late 80s graffiti scene and has since been reclaiming public spaces as a platform to emancipate art and make it truly accessible to everyone. Councils and, overall, the public domain have now recognized its power and ability to renew and revive cities, abandoned areas, and spark interest for people to (re)engage with commons. Many festivals, commissions, and dedicated museums now celebrate the diversity of styles coexisting within Street-Art. Some of the most prominent members of this movement include pioneers and precursors Keith Harring, Basquiat, Jacques Villeglé, and the more contemporary Banksy, Obey (Shepard Fairey), Invader, C215, JR, Vhils, Mr. Brainwash, FAKE, Jef Aerosol, Swoon, Speedy Graphito, Cornbread, Futura 2000, Kaws, D*Face, Misstic, Fin DAC, the London Police,1010, Alexi Diaz, Alias, Alice Pasquini, Axel Void, Blek le rat, Cranio, Super A, Danielle SeeWalker, Hoxxoh, Bortusk Kleer, Arsh Mandrome, Hök, Moabit, TedyZet, Utopia, Jago Oner, Santicri, Kev Munday amongst many, many more.
