Handcrafted Norwegian Folk Doll with Silver Brooch & Wooden Bed – ca. 1940s–50s – Schildkröt Composite Head (Germany)

An exceptionally well-preserved vintage doll featuring a handcrafted Norwegian national costume (bunad) and an authentic handmade silver brooch (sølje) – a traditional accessory used in real Norwegian folk dress.
This piece represents the type of high-quality confirmation gifts given to young girls in Norway after WWII, combining both symbolic and material value: beauty, craftsmanship, and a tangible silver item of lasting or increasing worth.

The doll’s head was produced in Germany – by Schildkröt – using a composite material (wood flour, chalk, and resin) with a molded “shoulder plate” base.
It is then hand-sewn to a sturdy cloth body and dressed locally in Norway in a complete bunad outfit with apron, embroidered blouse, vest, headscarf, and silver brooch.
The wooden bed, handmade in traditional Norwegian style, accompanies the set.

Condition
• Excellent original vintage condition (ca. 1940s–50s).
• The head shows two minor imperfections: a small dent on the nose and a tiny flake near the hairline, otherwise intact and beautifully preserved.
• The clothing is clean and complete, with no rips or holes.
• The silver brooch (sølje) is authentic and handmade, weighing approx. 5.47 g, tested 830/925 silver.
• Original wooden bed included.

Historical Context

After WWII, German doll heads were imported to Norway and finished locally with hand-sewn folk costumes.
These dolls were often confirmation or baptism gifts – carrying both emotional and financial symbolism.
The inclusion of a real silver sølje made them more than toys: they represented craft, identity, and a young woman’s first piece of silver jewelry.
