Active during the late 19th century, Toshimoto was known for his finely executed historical prints and scenic views. This work belongs to the series “Biographies of Renowned Warriors,” which depicts figures who distinguished themselves during the Meiji Restoration and the Satsuma Rebellion. The subject is Shinohara Kunimoto (1837–1877), a samurai and military commander from the Satsuma domain. A trusted lieutenant of Saigō Takamori, Shinohara led forces during the Satsuma Rebellion and was killed in action at the Battle of Tabaruzaka in March 1877. The print vividly portrays Shinohara in ornate military attire, raising his sword with a determined expression. The background features rich detailing and text commemorating his heroism. Published by Maeda Kihee in Osaka in Meiji 10 (1877), this print is a fine example of patriotic warrior imagery from the early Meiji era. Condition: It appears that the print features an attempt at urushi-e (lacquer-picture) technique on the pupils of the eyes—an Edo-period method to add gloss using lacquer-like substances—though the execution here is presumably not of the highest quality, as is sometimes seen in Meiji-era prints with imperfect printing. Some age-related stains and minor tears along the margins. Please refer to the photos for condition details. Dimensions: approx. H 36.3 cm W 24.8 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
