Shomei Tomatsu - 11:02 Nagasaki - 1966

11:02 Nagasaki Shomei Tomatsu Shashin Dojinsha/1966/Japanese/H235×W200mm/(Missing Slipcase) A collection of photographs by Shomei Toumatsu, one of Japan's leading post-war photographers, entitled Nagasaki (Missing Slipcase). Japan (1967)’, ’Oh! Shinjuku (1969), I am a King (1972) and Pencil of the Sun (1975), the documents left behind by Shomei Tomatsu in the 1960s and 1970s are not only valuable historical records, but also have pioneering value as artistic photographs. Shomei Higashimatsu was a central figure in driving the post-war prosperity of Japanese photography, which Takuma Nakahira and Daido Moriyama admired. This book is the first collection of Higashimatsu's photographs alone, and is a brilliant treasure in the history of Japanese photography. In 1961, 15 years after the atomic bombing, Higashimatsu landed in Nagasaki for the first time and saw the reality of a city that was beginning to show signs of recovery, but where many people were still living in fear for their lives and health for tomorrow. We must not let this fact be ‘forgotten’, and so we continued to confront the city and its people.
