This ukiyo-e woodblock print was created by Katsushika Hokusai, a master ukiyo-e artist of Japan’s Edo period, in Bunka 8 (1815 CE). It was reissued in the 1960s under the supervision of Tadao Takamizawa.
The composition centers on a winter snowscape in Japan’s Hokuriku region (modern-day Niigata, Toyama Prefectures, corresponding to the historical Echigo and Etchū districts): Travelers, herdsmen, and pack horses—cloaked in snow-resistant straw raincoats (蓑)—traverse a snow-covered mountain path. Distant snow-capped peaks and lakes amplify the cold, arduous atmosphere of winter travel, embodying the quintessential Japanese "seasonal motif" (季節風物,kisetsu fūbutsu) theme.
A Japanese-language description is printed on the protective sheet accompanying the print. Due to the passage of time, the washi paper exhibits slight oxidative yellowing, but the overall condition remains good.
