Biography Yamamoto Sosen (1679–1760) Yamamoto Sosen was a mid-Edo period painter born in Kyoto in 1679 and died in 1760 at the age of 82. His real name was Morifusa, commonly known as Kazuma, and he used the alias Tanchosai. He became the adopted son of Yamamoto Sokken and studied the Kano school style of painting. He was appointed Hōkyō in 1725 and Hōin in 1749. He is noted for works such as the "Hyakka-zu Byobu," depicting birds and flowers in vivid colors on gold backgrounds. His style reflects a naturalistic approach influenced by horticulture and herbal studies. As the fourth-generation head of the Yamamoto family, he produced works for the Imperial Court and the Mitsui family. He established a style that combined the decorative aesthetics of the Kano school with realistic observation.
