Autumn Reverie Vase 秋想壷 - 陶瓷 - Hiroshi Komazawa 駒澤博司 (b. 1951) - 日本 - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

About the Works Artist: Hiroshi Komazawa 駒澤博司 Title of work:Autumn Reverie Vase 秋想壷 This work, "Autumn Reverie Vase," is an elegant narrow-mouthed vase created by the Japanese ceramic artist Hiroshi Komazawa. The vertically elongated form and modestly flaring rim present a beautiful balance, while the rounded body gives a soft impression. The overall gray speckled pattern evokes the texture of natural stone surfaces or a starry sky, creating a sense of depth in its expression. The decoration features fine lines running vertically, carved delicately like autumn grasses, intersecting with a gold-glimmering crescent moon motif to poetically express an autumnal scene. The subtle matte surface contrasts with the intricate design detail, making this piece a distinguished work of contemporary ceramics that combines tranquility and strength. This artwork, which conveys a fusion of modern sensibility and traditional beauty, stands out with a commanding presence in any ceramic collection. Size: Mouth diameter: 4.5 cm Width: 14 cm Height: 36 cm Weight: 2,450 g About the Artist Hiroshi Komazawa is a Japanese ceramic artist currently based in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture. Trained initially in law at Chuo University, he left the program to pursue ceramics in Mashiko under Takahito Omiyaji, later refining his skills at the Bizen kiln of Ichiyo Kimura. In 1976 he established his own kiln in Mashiko and subsequently moved his studio to Kasama in 1982, where he has continued to develop a highly sculptural approach to clay. Over the years he has created a series of bodies of work such as the “Wall,” “Matera,” “Nowhere,” “Letter,” and “Scrolls” series, exploring themes of landscape, memory, and spatial depth through the surfaces and masses of earthen forms. Since the late 1970s he has held numerous solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries across Japan, including venues in his hometown of Tsuruoka as well as in Tokyo, Kasama, and other pottery centers, and he has also participated in international exhibitions that introduced his work abroad. While he is widely recognized for wall pieces and object-like sculptural works that push beyond conventional vessel forms, he also produces functional pieces such as vases, bowls, and cups whose quiet presence, matte textures, and carefully considered forms embody a contemporary interpretation of Japanese ceramic tradition.
