Seiryū Kandan Nashi 清流無間断(せいりゅう かんだん なし) – Seihan Mori 森清範(もり せいはん)
Kakejiku (hanging scroll) featuring the calligraphy of Seihan Mori, the Abbot (Kansu) of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. Kiyomizu-dera is one of the major temples within the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto”. Works personally brushed by the Abbot hold an important place within the context of contemporary Japanese calligraphy and temple-related cultural arts.
“清流無間断” (Seiryū Kandan Nashi) is a Zen phrase meaning:
“Just as a clear stream flows without interruption, anything that continues its activity constantly remains free of stagnation and stays pure.”
The work is brushed directly on Kaishi, a formal paper used in traditional cultural settings. Both the main paper and the mounting (Hyōsō) remain in very good condition. The piece dates from around the year 2000.
This lot includes crystal-glazed Fuchin (scroll weights). Fuchin are small weights used to gently stabilize a hanging scroll and keep it from swaying. The crystal glaze forms fine, glass-like surface patterns characteristic of this technique, adding a refined accent to the Kaishi calligraphy. It also includes a signed Tomobako (wooden box) and a double-layer lacquered storage box inscribed with the name of the original owner. With the calligraphy brushed on Kaishi and the accompanying Fuchin that complement it, the set offers a well-composed example of the Abbot’s brushwork.
