日本茶碗——两只老鼠,一瞬间,一只幸运之器 - 陶瓷 - Hansai Kikkō 吉向蕃斎 (1924—2018) - 日本 - Heisei period (1989-present)
This is an exquisite chawan (tea bowl) by the distinguished Japanese ceramic artist Hansai Kikkō (吉向蕃斎), known for his masterful integration of traditional techniques with a unique contemporary sensibility. The bowl features a striking reddish-brown slip (engobe) surface that has been carefully incised and carved to reveal two finely modeled white mice in relief—delicate and expressive motifs that symbolize good fortune, abundance, and fertility in Japanese folklore.
The tactile surface and soft, uneven form lend the piece a wabi-sabi aesthetic, emphasizing simplicity, asymmetry, and natural beauty. Decorative incised patterns resembling bamboo or grain motifs wrap around the body, giving the piece a rhythmic and organic quality. Inside, the reddish slip finish continues with soft, brushed textures, and the base bears the artist’s impressed seal. This item includes an original signed wooden storage box, silk cloth bearing the artist's seal, and a leaflet detailing the origins of the kiln where the artist works.. A rare and meaningful addition to any serious chawan or Japanese ceramics collection.
About Hansai Kikkō (吉向蕃斎)
Hansai Kikkō is part of the prestigious Kikkō lineage of ceramicists, with a family tradition dating back to the Edo period. Based in Osaka, the Kikkō kiln is historically known for supplying high-quality tea wares to the Japanese aristocracy and tea masters. Hansai, the 7th generation in this lineage, upholds classical techniques while infusing his work with uniquely expressive themes rooted in Buddhism, folklore, and nature.
Hansai’s work is distinguished by his masterful use of relief carving, balanced forms, and rich glazes, often featuring auspicious motifs and spiritual figures. He has exhibited widely and is respected in the field of contemporary Japanese ceramics for maintaining the heritage of tea ware while also pushing the boundaries of its aesthetic and symbolic expression. His pieces are held in private collections and occasionally featured in museum exhibitions dedicated to Japanese tea culture.
