【Product details】
This is a full-size samurai armor set from the Edo period, consisting of a helmet, a half face mask with throat guard, a cuirass offering robust chest protection, skirt plates for the lower body, large shoulder guards, arm guards, thigh guards, and shin guards.
The helmet is mounted with a forecrest featuring an inome (boar’s eye) design surrounded by an upward wisteria motif. The inome was a popular protective symbol, believed to ward off evil spirits and misfortune, making it both a decorative and auspicious element in samurai armour. On the turnbacks of the helmet, the prestigious Gosan no Kiri (Paulownia with five-seven-three leaves) crest is displayed. Originally an imperial emblem, the kiri crest was bestowed by the Emperor upon retainers for distinguished service, marking it as a highly elevated symbol. During the Muromachi and Sengoku periods, it became associated with major rulers, including Ashikaga Takauji and Oda Nobunaga, before being famously adopted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a symbol of supreme authority and rulership.
The armor is finished in a dark lacquer, with chain and textile elements integrated into the sleeves and shoulder protection. This set includes its wooden armor storage box.
Condition is consistent with age and long use. There are scuffs, small scratches, lacquer loss and cracking, discoloration, stains, fabric tears, small holes, fraying of cords, and areas of retouching to the lacquer on the cuirass. The left shoulder clasp on the cuirass is missing, and one pin on the upper back is also absent. Rust, tarnish, and handwritten numbering can be seen in places. The armor box shows heavy wear, with damage, scratches, and a side panel nearly detached, though it remains marginally functional. The stand is NOT included. Please refer carefully to the photographs for full details. The item will be shipped by FedEx.
Dimensions of the Box: approx. H 53 cm W 40 cm D 40 cm
Height on display: approx. 147 cm
