Takayama ishô'dansu 衣装箪笥(带抽屉的柜子) - Hinoki(杉木)、铁、Keyaki木 - 日本 - Meiji period (1868-1912)
A striking lacquered wooden Takayama dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in two sections. Restored, cleaned, and waxed in Japan.
The exterior and drawer fronts are crafted from indigenous hinoki (cypress) wood with two panels made of precious keyaki (Zelkova – ‘Japanese oak’). Showcasing a beautiful reddish-orange Shunkei lacquer finish. This type of lacquer begins as yellow-orange and matures into a rich red-orange hue over time, as seen in this cabinet.
The upper section features a pair of small adjacent drawers and two full-width drawers, while the lower section contains two more full-width drawers. The small drawers are of a ‘panel’-type, a distinctive feature of Takayama cabinets. All drawers run smoothly and provide ample storage space.
Fitted with elegant iron ‘kushigata’-shaped bail handles, paired with circular lock plates. The sides are equipped with ‘warabite’-shaped totte (grip handles).
These types of cabinets originate from the mountain town of Takayama in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
The two sections can also be displayed side by side, as both parts are finished with a lacquered top surface.
