Peacock, Pink and White Peonies with Box - Attributed Maruyama Okyo 円山応挙 (1733-1795) - 日本 - Late Edo period

円山応挙 Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) Painter of the late Edo period, founder of the Maruyama school. Initially, he learned the painting techniques of the Kano school from 石田幽汀 Ishida Yutei (1721-1786) in Kyoto. He left behind ink paintings with the sharp brushwork and broken ink style characteristic of the Kano School, as well as works influenced by Western-style painting. Later, he created a unique, plain Okyo style that skillfully combined decorative elements with smooth lines and sketchy elements. In particular, he skillfully depicted a wide variety of subjects, including Sansui landscapes, flowers and birds, and figures, and many of his large paintings, such as fusuma paintings and folding screens, are masterpieces. Many painters gathered under his tutelage and formed the Maruyama School. Age: 1787 July / 天明丁未孟秋 with signature 'Okyo' 應挙 and seal 'Okyo no in' 應挙 之 印 'Chusen' 仲選 An exquisite hanging scroll painting by Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795), one of Japan’s most celebrated Edo-period painters and founder of the Maruyama school. This work, dated July 1787 (Tenmei 丁未, early autumn), features a masterfully rendered peacock perched among blooming pink and white peonies—symbols of dignity, prosperity, and seasonal beauty in East Asian aesthetics. The peacock’s plumage is painted with remarkable precision and naturalism, showcasing Ōkyo’s pioneering approach to realism and his deep observation of nature. The composition balances elegance and vitality, with delicate brushwork and harmonious coloration set against a warm background. The scroll bears Ōkyo’s signature (應挙) and two seals: "Okyo no in" 應挙之印 and "Chusen" 仲選, confirming its authorship and studio provenance. It is housed in a period wooden storage box, aged and patinated, adding historical depth and authenticity to the piece. A rare and culturally significant artifact for collectors of Japanese painting, Edo-period scrolls, and classical naturalist art.
