ABOUT THE PAINTING: Azul celebrates the deep waters surrounding the Aeolian Islands in Sicily. It reflects on how certain landscapes—especially those we can’t fully see or know—continue to shape us. The sea here is not just a setting but a presence: beautiful, endless, and unknowable. There is something in the depth that pulls and unsettles, echoing an old, shared anthropological fascination for what lies beyond sight. After painting Azul, I swam out and looked down. For a few seconds underwater, I saw that same blue: still, vast, and out of reach. The work doesn’t try to explain it. It simply brings it back to a word—Azul—and leaves it there, open.
