日本铜狮子——铸造在金属中的神话,根植于传统 - 黄铜色 - 日本 - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

This is a finely crafted Japanese bronze sculpture representing a Shishi (獅子, also known as a guardian lion or Foo dog), an auspicious and protective creature deeply rooted in East Asian religious and artistic traditions. Traditionally placed at the entrances of temples, shrines, and noble residences, Shishi are believed to ward off evil spirits and attract good fortune. In this particular work, the Shishi is captured in an animated stance, with its muscular body slightly leaning forward and one paw powerfully placed on an openwork sphere. This sphere features deeply carved floral motifs, with overlapping petals and arabesque-style leaves rendered in three dimensions. As a Japanese design, it possesses a splendor that evokes symbols of “beauty,” “prosperity,” and “rebirth.” The flowing mane and curling fur details reflect classical Japanese aesthetics and are meticulously rendered with a sense of movement and vitality. The dynamic posture and bold facial expression, combined with the symmetrical composition, demonstrate a high level of artistry in bronze casting. The sculpture features a lustrous deep brown patina with reddish undertones, which highlights the fine surface textures and adds visual depth and warmth. It is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), bearing handwritten Japanese calligraphy on both the lid and the underside. This suggests the sculpture may have been produced as a special commission or commemorative item. The box shows some wear and minor cracking due to age, but it remains structurally intact and is an important part of the piece’s provenance. A striking fusion of symbolism and craftsmanship, this piece would make a valuable addition to any collection of Japanese bronzeware or Asian art.
