The piece features a rugged, stone-like exterior combined with a smooth celadon-toned interior glaze. The technique is referred to as “sekka” (literally “stone-transformation”), evoking a natural rock formation with a refined glazed pool inside, creating a strong contrast between raw earth and delicate ceramic surface. Satoh Kazuhiko was born in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1947. He graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Crafts, in 1970, and completed the graduate programme in ceramics in 1972. During his studies he trained under Fujimoto Yoshimichi and Tamura Kōichi. His graduation work received the Salon de Printemps Prize. From the 1970s onward, he held numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Japan, exploring hand-formed ceramics with a bold sculptural presence. A printed biography sheet (career record) is included with this piece. The underside is inscribed “Satoh 1996”. The original wooden box is signed and stamped by the artist, and the accompanying cloth also bears the artist’s seal. Very good used condition with minimal wear.
