Tissot Newtimer Jump Hour Automatic (Stainless Steel, Switzerland) – 1970s Direct-Read Classic - Jump Watch XL Automatic This circa 1974 Tissot Newtimer direct-read is a very uncommon version of this watch. The case measures 40.5mm in steel with the original crystal and crown. The original black dial is such a rich and alluring colour. The steel case is great confition. The automatic winding Tissot jump-hour movement was just cleaned and is accurate. This watch is rarely unused and looks amazing. Model Overview The Tissot Newtimer is one of the brand’s boldest 1970s designs, built around a mechanical “jump hour” display that reads like an early digital watch. Produced in the early–mid 1970s, it uses the automatic Tissot calibre 2581 with jumping hour and minutes, and a separate date window at 6 o’clock. The large, cushion-shaped steel case and minimalist black dial with central digital aperture are pure space-age styling. Pieces in good, original condition are increasingly hard to find, and this example offers the full visual impact of the design with a clean dial and crisp printing. It’s a true conversation piece from the golden age of experimental Swiss watchmaking. Technical Specifications Brand: Tissot Model: Newtimer Jump Hour Automatic, ref. 4560x (exact suffix not checked) Movement: Automatic mechanical, Tissot cal. 2581, jump hour with date Country of Manufacture: Switzerland Production Era: ca. 1970–1979 Serial / Case Number: (inside or between lugs) Case Material: Stainless steel Dimensions: Approx. 40 mm width (excluding crown), ca. 44 mm lug-to-lug, substantial wrist presence Bezel: Integrated, fixed, cushion-shaped case with polished/brushed surfaces Crystal: Domed mineral glass (likely original) Water Resistance: Not tested; offered as not water-resistant Dial & Hands Dial Colour: Deep black Markers: Clean graphic layout with horizontal white line and printed frame around the digital display, no applied indices Date: Quick-set date at 6 o’clock in a framed window Branding: “Tissot” and “Newtimer” printed below the 12 o’clock position; “Automatic”, “Swiss Made” above and below the date Hands: Direct-read digital time display via rotating discs – no conventional hands Caseback Material: Stainless steel Attachment: Screw-down Engravings: Tissot branding, reference and material markings (not fully documented here) Strap & Buckle Strap: New black leather strap with contrasting white stitching, approx. 20 mm, suitable for wrists up to about 19–20 cm; aftermarket replacement Buckle: Polished Tissot-signed pin buckle in stainless steel Notable Historical / Brand Context In the early 1970s Tissot joined the short but spectacular era of mechanical “digital” watches with the Newtimer line. Using the in-house calibre 2581 jump-hour movement, these watches offered an avant-garde alternative to traditional hands just as quartz was arriving on the market. The cushion case, racing-stripe dial graphics and direct-read discs echo contemporary motorsport-inspired designs and sit comfortably beside other experimental 1970s pieces from Omega and Longines. Today the Newtimer is recognised as one of Tissot’s most distinctive vintage creations. Collector Appeal & Value Potential This watch targets collectors who appreciate bold 1970s design, jump-hour complications and slightly under-the-radar Swiss brands with serious history. Original Newtimer automatics have seen growing demand as enthusiasts rediscover mechanical “digital” watches, and comparable examples in good condition have sold steadily at auction. With its strong case size, striking black dial and cult-movement calibre 2581, this example offers both daily-wear charm and long-term collectability. Condition Report Vintage, gently used condition. The large stainless-steel case shows minimal superficial scratches, hairlines orsmall marks from normal wear- super aesthetic- and can be gently polished, ; edges remain well defined and the overall shape is intact. Dial and digital discs are clean, with sharp printing and no visible discoloration; date window also presents well. Crystal appears clear with only light signs of use. The automatic movement is running and the jump-hour display changes correctly during brief observation; accuracy and power reserve have not been tested over 24 hours and a service is recommended for optimal performance. The leather strap and non-signed buckle are later replacements. Includes an unfilled modern Tissot international warranty card - from my purchase in Germany 2000's + tissot 150 y annyversary box. Sold as a vintage timepiece with no water-resistance guarantee.
