Jizo vowed to save all beings in the six realms of existence during the age between the passing of Shakyamuni and the coming of Maitreya. In Japan, he is widely worshipped as the protector of children, travellers, and departed souls. The figure holds a pilgrim’s staff in the right hand, whose sound guides lost souls and drives away evil, and a wish-fulfilling jewel in the left hand, a symbol of compassion believed to grant the wishes of all beings and relieve their suffering. The altar cabinet (zushi) has a black lacquered exterior. The inner door surfaces are coated with lacquer mixed with gold powder, while the rest of the interior is finished in black lacquer. The gold areas of the figure and base are painted using lacquer blended with gold powder, creating a subtle golden glow. The sculpture is fixed to the cabinet base. On the back of the cabinet, an inscription is carved with the name of the donor, indicating that the piece was originally created and dedicated for memorial or devotional purposes, as an act of religious offering. The piece shows age-related wear such as surface abrasions, discolouration, cracks and small losses in the lacquer, minor holes, rust on the metal fittings, and surface grime.
