In Anglo-Saxon England and on the European continent, expensive, jeweled buckles were the main element of men's jewelry, especially for nobles during the 7th century. The first buckles were made of bronze and were widely produced, with widespread use in many cultures. During the Byzantine era, skilled craftsmen produced aesthetically simple buckles that demonstrated the quality of their workmanship. Different metalworking methods, such as hammering, embossing, and gilding, were applied to enrich pieces of jewelry, including buckles, which in turn displayed the wealth and status of their owners.
