A traditional wooden baby carrier, known as a ba' or bening, from the Dayak Modang people.
Borneo - Second half 20th century
This is a baby carrier from Borneo of the Dayak Modang tribe from Apo Kayan Kalimantan(Southern Borneo), featuring a large Fertility Figurine flanked by 29 other Modang warriors, each carved from wood.
These carriers were used for both daily wear and ceremonies, and were believed to protect the baby from illness, evil spirits, and wandering spirits.
This particular example is made of wood and decorated with elaborate carvings of Modang warriors as protective spirits and other symbols.
The eyes and crown piece of the central fertility figure are made of shells. The teeth are from an animal.
On either side of the carrier hang three "bells" made from a particular nut shell. The inside of the baby carrier is finished with a type of wicker, most likely pandanus leaf weave.
