17th-Century Set of Two Tin Relief Plaques — St. Michael Psychostasis & The Madonna
Origin: Likely Southern Netherlands (Flanders), 17th century
Provenance: Private Belgian collection
A devotional set of two early tin reliefs, both retaining excellent character and age.
• The first relief depicts St. Michael the Archangel weighing souls: a powerful scene of psychostasis, where Michael holds a sword and a balance (scales) while subduing a demon below his feet — symbolizing the victory of divine justice.
• The second presents the Virgin Mary in prayer, enclosed within a radiant mandorla and framed by three cherubic heads. A suspension loop at the top indicates historical use in personal devotion or a small chapel setting.
Dimensions: approx. 10 × 7 cm each
Material: Cast tin
Condition: Good for age — expected wear, patina and small losses consistent with 17th-century devotional use.
A beautiful and authentic pair of Flemish religious reliefs — expressive, compact, and full of spiritual symbolism.
