【Product details】
This elegant wakizashi was crafted by Fujiwara Naonobu (attribution to be confirmed) in January 1865, during the final years of the Edo period. The sword signed '藤原直信作 源光一應好 元治二年正月日' Additional characters are carved along the spine of the blade, although they are unfortunately undecipherable.
This sword comes with a plain wooden storage scabbard and is accompanied by a copy of its Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate from Nagano Prefecture, number 69828, as the original document will be returned to the authorities. The certificate details are as follows: This is a wakizashi with a blade length of 40.4 cm and a curvature of 0.7 cm. It has one peg hole, and the inscriptions read "Crafted by Fujiwara Naonobu" on the front, "Minamoto Koichi special order, made in January, Genji 2 (1865)" on the reverse, and undeciphered characters along the spine. The certificate was issued on February 6, 1980 (Showa 55).
The blade shows some rust and wear, but overall it remains in good antique condition. The copper habaki has minor dents and patina. The scabbard fits well, though the opening and closing action is a bit tight. The wooden handle displays some scuffs and two small chips at the end. The silk bag, which features a charming gourd pattern, shows signs of fading and discolouration.
Please refer to the photos for further details. The display stand is not included with this lot.
Length of the blade: 54 cm
Total length including scabbard: 63.5 cm
