DECORATIVE MAP OF THE NETHERLANDS, FRIESLAND PROVINCE, Antique Netherlands in the Early Middle Ages and during the Frankish Empire, by François Halma (1653-1722), was a Dutch publisher active in Utrecht (starting 1674) and later in Amsterdam where he worked as printer and publisher from 1699-1710. This map was printed in 1725, by Henrik Halma in Leeuwarden. PLEASE NOTE: the buyer will also receive a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Genuine antique copper engraving, beautiful colors, very good condition, no particular cuts or defects to report, normal small imperfections due to time as per photo, laid paper with chain lines, centre fold as published, on the back remains of the original binding, please see the photo. To complete the documentation, the photo of the title of the work is also published with the name of the artists who created the prints. This map is from the book “Tooneel der vereenigde Nederlanden" (Theatre of the United Netherlands), reference; Koeman II, 126. Fine example of François Halma's map and with decorative cartouches, ships, rivers, coat of arms, harbors, major cities and printed in 1725. Sheet size: height 392 x width 470 mm (15.5 by 18.5 inches). The maps were made by the following artists who worked for the Halma studio at that time: François Halma (1653-1722) editor; Matthaeus Brouerius van Nidek (1677-1743) editor; Frederik Ottens (1694-1727) engraver; Jan Goeree (1670-1731) engraver; Gilliam van der Gouwen (1657-1716) engraver. AUTHOR/CARTOGRAPHER: François Halma (1653-1722) was a Dutch publisher active in Utrecht (starting 1674) and later in Amsterdam where he worked as printer and publisher from 1699-1710. He eventually settled at Leeuwarden, where he died. His output was composed of botanical, theological and historical works, but also, he published a small number of geographies and atlases. In 1695, he published an edition of Gerard Mercator's Ptolemy. His re-issue of Schotanus à Sterringa’s Friesche Atlas in 1698 was regarded among his finest work. He also published an edition of Sanson’s Description de l’Univers. He produced an edition of Falda's plan of Rome in or around 1700. He made maps of the continents which were later bound in a Visscher atlas of 1710. The execution of these large and rare maps, drawn by Jan Goeree and engraved by Jan Baptiste, was of a very high quality.
