Red pottery oil lamp. Byzantine Empire. 5th-6th century AD.
An oil lamp is used to produce light continuously using an oil-based fuel source. The use of oil lamps began thousands of years ago and continues to this day.
Red pottery oil lamp with geometric decoration in its shoulders and a male figure with a bunch of grapes in its discus. It has two pouring holes and one wick hole in its nozzle. A solid spikelike handle flattened on sides sits at the top of the lamp. A raised ridge encircles the discus and extends outwards around the nozzle hole, forming a broad channel on the rounded spout.
