After the German occupation, it was transformed into a transit camp, functioning from 1942 to 1945 as the central hub from which more than 100,000 Jews, Sinti, and Roma were deported to extermination and concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Sobibor, Bergen-Belsen, and Theresienstadt.
