This is a cleared-and-stained specimen of Etmopterus lucifer, a tiny deep-sea shark. The bright blue and purple colors come from special clearing process that make the bones and cartilage easy to see. Because the body is transparent, you can clearly observe its inner structure. The Lucifer lanternshark lives in very deep, dark oceans. It has small light-producing spots on its body that allow it to glow.
