This is a Japanese chawan (tea bowl) crafted in high-fired stoneware and intended for use in the traditional tea ceremony. The bowl has a shallow, gently flaring form, well balanced in the hand and suitable for whisking and appreciating matcha.
The surface features a warm, pale beige glaze with natural iron spotting, combined with expressive dark drip and splash accents around the exterior and foot. These decorative elements are characteristic of Oribe-style and Oribe-influenced wares, where controlled spontaneity and contrast are central to the aesthetic. The glaze thins naturally at the rim, revealing subtle clay texture and firing marks.
The interior is softly glazed, with gentle pooling toward the center, creating a calm visual focus when viewed from above. The foot is neatly formed and shows a clear impressed potter’s seal, indicating authorship or workshop origin. While the specific artist has not been conclusively identified, the presence of a seal suggests production by an established studio potter rather than anonymous folk ware.
The tea bowl is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako) bearing handwritten ink inscriptions and red seal impressions. The box identifies the piece as a tea bowl and is consistent with artist- or studio-inscribed boxes from the Showa period (mid-20th century), adding to the authenticity and collectible value.
Dimensions (approximate):
– Diameter: about 13 cm
– Height: about 6–6.5 cm
Condition is good. No cracks or repairs observed. Minor glaze variations, kiln marks, and surface irregularities are inherent to the firing process and are considered part of the intended wabi-sabi character.
