Description
An elegant Harari basket, known as an agelbel or agelgil, traditionally used to store and transport injera, the fermented flatbread at the heart of Ethiopian cuisine.
This finely made basketry piece is entirely covered with leather, a characteristic feature that ensured durability, insulation, and protection of the food. Such baskets were everyday household objects in Harar, where injera is not only a staple food but also a strong cultural symbol, shared during communal meals.
This example likely dates from the 1960s and remains in very good condition. The leather has developed a superb patina through use and time, enhancing both its tactile quality and visual appeal. A modest yet authentic object, combining function, material intelligence, and understated beauty.
