Art Deco “Floraliès” Vase by Doyen
Belgium, ca. 1930s
A striking example of Belgian Art Deco design, this large amethyst glass vase was produced in the 1930s by the renowned Doyen glassworks in Havré-Ville (Mons), Belgium. Part of the esteemed “Floralies” series, this model—number 139—is documented in both the reference book Verre et Noir by É. & L. Lagnard and in an original Doyen production catalogue, confirming its authenticity and typology.
Blown in richly saturated amethyst glass, the vase features a sculptural silhouette with tiered shoulders, a flared rim, and a fluted body that beautifully catches the light. Its generous proportions, rare form, and excellent condition make it a standout collector’s piece—a testament to the elegance and innovation of 1930s Belgian glassmaking.
The vase is entirely handmade; slight imperfections are acceptable.
In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era.
Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors.
Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage.
