Signed Watanabe Sadami (1917-1994)
Born on March 8, 1917 (Taisho 6) in Tsuchiyu, Fukushima, as the second son of Jisaku Watanabe and Iku, into a family of traditional craftsmen.
After graduating from Joraku Elementary School in 1928, he followed his father’s work and later trained in woodturning from January 1967 under his younger brother Hitoshi.
He began producing kokeshi dolls in March 1968 and successfully created the Kumematsu, Yonekichi, and Yukichi styles upon the recommendation of Tokio Shikama.
Some of his works were selected for the 2nd distribution of the Kokeshi Yume-mei Association, and from 1971 his son-in-law Tadao Watanabe became his apprentice.
He passed away on April 17, 1994, at the age of 78.
Signed Sato Yoshiaki (1906-1991)
Born on November 20, 1906 (Meiji 39) in Togatta-Shinchi, Miyagi Prefecture, as the second son of woodturner Matsunosuke Sato and Aki.
He began training in woodturning under his father during elementary school and first painted kokeshi in 1923 while working in Zao Takayu.
He later worked as a craftsman in several regions, gaining broad experience, and in the 1930s established his own workshop using water-powered and later electric lathes.
After World War II, he trained several apprentices and from around 1965 focused mainly on painting kokeshi rather than turning.
He passed away on April 1, 1991, at the age of 86, leaving behind a respected legacy in Togatta kokeshi tradition.
