Born in Shinto Village, Gunma Prefecture in 1917. After working on crafts using artificial stone and metal, he began manufacturing kokeshi dolls in 1950. Soon after, in addition to the brush painting that was mainstream at the time, he developed techniques for creating a three-dimensional effect using carving and pyrography, creating the prototype for the Usaburo Kokeshi dolls that we know today. He devoted himself to researching ways to prevent wood from cracking, and succeeded in incorporating a succession of woods that were previously considered unsuitable for processing into kokeshi dolls.
