Profile: Obscure Dutch organ/drums duo.
Members: Cees P. de Visser, Ernst Kersting
Opgenomen live 7 April 1972, Ruimtes Situatie Centrum, Rotterdam, door Siegro Studio's.
Ernst performed from 1948 until the 1950s in various jazz bands as a vibraphonist, then played gypsy melodies with his brother in Antwerp. He won the first prize at the AVRO competition with the band Maple Leaf Sextet. In 1971 he founded the band Ellufant with drummer and artist Cees P. Visser. The band had many different names: first Abondoned Elephant, then Ellufant but also 11Phant, Ellef-fant. Ernst played with a homemade electric organ. Erst built the organ in collaboration with V.S.K. electronics in Rotterdam has a store in this area. They did not try to imitate a pipe organ, but rather to use electrics with a completely different sound. This collaboration has resulted in a double organ with extensive possibilities for distortion and synthizer effects. The 290 Watt amplifier and the special speakers are also in collaboration with the V.S.K. electronics building. The interplay is based on themes with improvisation and the songs vary in length from half an hour to three-quarters of an hour. They released one LP with 150 copies, based on a live recording from 1972 with two tracks: Ubiquinon and Ouabaïn. Ernst asked a pharmacist friend if he had an idea for a name for both titles, if you google it you will find the meaning of this titels. The LP was sold for 10 guilders to benefit Release, an alternative help and information center for drug users, among others. The music is characterized as psychedelically progressive jazz rock. In 1984 he performed in LanterenVenster with the music performance Situatie 3. Kersting made visual art and music on his synthesizer until an old age.
No need to seek out an (unfindable) original of this ultra rare album, this reissue of mysterious origin has absolutely EXCELLENT sound quality. I have my suspicions that this was put out by a band member or a close associate, because whoever did this was obviously in possession of the master tapes--that's how good it sounds. It may even sound better than the original pressing (it's not unusual for well mastered and pressed reissues to sound better than original vintage pressings). Check out the YouTube videos to get a taste of this freakout/experimental/psych/Krautrock-like gem, then buy this bargain priced reissue! Originals are so rare (a one time micro-label pressing of only 150 copies) that Steven Stapleton clearly never encountered one, otherwise this would have definitely ended up on his now legendary Nurse With Wound list.
Very recommended! Two long jams with drums and a detuned, sometimes distorted organ. Krautlike and similar to Soft Machine!
