The mounting was renewed during the Shōwa era. Katen, also known as the Fire Deity, belongs to the group of Twelve Guardian Devas. Originally derived from the Hindu god Agni, he was later incorporated into Buddhist cosmology. He is traditionally portrayed surrounded by flames, symbolising purification, protection, and transformative power. This scroll shows the deity standing before a dynamic red flame backdrop, rendered with expressive brushwork and strong colour contrasts. The scroll is mounted in an elegant textile border with a calm, classical pattern. The roller ends are crafted from wood and copper. It comes housed in its own wooden storage box. There is surface wear consistent with age, including creases, staining, pigment flaking, and minor losses to the painted paper surface. The paint layer is fragile, and small flakes come off when the scroll is moved. The mounting remains in good condition. The scroll comes with a removable wooden attachment that fits onto the roller ends. The wooden storage box shows small scratches, marks, and age-related blemishes.
