Author:
Utagawa Kunitoshi (歌川 国利, Utagawa Kunitoshi; 1847 [Kōka 4] – September 7, 1899 [Meiji 32]) was a ukiyo-e artist active in the Meiji period.
He was initially a pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni III, and after Toyokuni’s death became a disciple of Utagawa Kunisada II. His original family name was Yamamura, and his given name was Seisuke. He adopted the Utagawa art surname and used several artist names, including Kunitoshi, Baiju, Baiō, and Baiō Dōjin. His shop name (yagō) was Mikawaya. From 1884 (Meiji 17) onward, he was also known as Baiju Kunitoshi.
He lived at 35 Ogawa-chō, Kanda, in Tokyo. His period of artistic activity extended from the Keiō era through approximately 1896 (Meiji 29). From around 1874 (Meiji 7), he produced views of Ginza, horse-drawn railways, and modern landmarks such as the Mitsui Bank, as well as kaika-e (prints of modernization), kirikumi-e (cut-and-assembled prints), genre scenes, and engraved copperplate maps.
He died at the age of 53. His grave is located at Kanzō-in Temple in Motoasakusa, Taitō Ward, Tokyo, and his posthumous Buddhist name is Shūfū Kunitoshi Shinshi.
