Description
An important Songye nkishi power figure from the Kalebwe subgroup, carved in a dense hardwood and bearing a deep, dark, lustrous patina. Nkishi figures played a central role in Songye society as protective and mediating power objects, activated to safeguard lineages, resolve conflicts, and counter malevolent forces.
This sculpture represents a female figure, standing with the hands placed on either side of the abdomen, a posture associated with containment of vital forces. The head is fully turned to the right, an uncommon and striking feature that reinforces the figure’s expressive intensity. The face displays a distinctly cubist treatment, while the torso is conceived with an architectural clarity, reflecting the formal rigor characteristic of southern Songye workshops of the early 20th century.
The overall composition conveys a strong sense of authority and balance. The surface shows honest signs of age and ritual life, with minor losses consistent with long use, without affecting the figure’s structural integrity or visual power.
A fine and well-documented example of a Kalebwe lineage nkishi, combining sculptural strength, cultural significance, and an appealing provenance.
