Soviet Transitional Award Banner – Lenin Portrait – Socialist Competition – USSR, c. 1960–1980
Large original Soviet ceremonial banner with ideological slogans and gold fringe - 120 x 80 cm
An authentic Soviet transitional award banner (“Переходящее знамя”), produced and used in the USSR during the mid-to-late 20th century, most likely between the 1960s and 1980s.
Such banners were official state awards, ceremonially presented to factories, collective farms, brigades, or institutions for outstanding results in socialist competition. They were displayed in assembly halls, clubs, administrative buildings, and during official parades and meetings. This object represents a genuine material witness of Soviet ideological culture and labor propaganda.
Front side:
The front features the State Emblem of the USSR with the hammer and sickle over a globe, framed by wheat sheaves and ribbons of the Soviet republics.
Below is a gilded ideological slogan attributed to V. I. Lenin:
“Мы придём к победе коммунистического труда!”
(“We shall come to the victory of communist labor!”)
The inscription is executed in gold-colored lettering on a deep red textile background, with decorative gold Fringe along both the upper and lower edges.
Reverse side:
The reverse displays a stylized portrait of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, executed as a fabric applique, characteristic of Soviet ceremonial banners of this type. Fringe along both the upper and lower edges.
Main inscription:
“Переходящее знамя
за высокие показатели
в социалистическом соревновании”
(“Transitional banner for high achievements in socialist competition”)
In the upper corner appears the classic Marxist slogan:
“Пролетарии всех стран, соединяйтесь!”
(“Workers of the world, unite!”)
Material and construction:
- Textile banner in deep red color
- Gold-colored inscriptions and decorative elements
- Applied portrait composition
- Original factory-made gold fringe along the bottom edge
- Large ceremonial format, intended for wall or stage display
Dimensions: approx. 120 × 80 cm
Condition:
The banner is offered in original, unrestored condition.
-Visible signs of age and historical use include:
- surface stains and discoloration
- creases and fold marks from long-term storage
- localized fabric wear and small tears
- minor losses and abrasions to the textile
- natural aging of the gold elements and fringe
These traces are consistent with authentic period use and add to the historical character of the object. No modern restoration or alterations detected.
Historical context:
Transitional banners were a central element of the Soviet system of ideological motivation. Unlike personal medals, they symbolized collective achievement and were passed from one winning enterprise to another, reinforcing competition within the planned economy.
Surviving examples in large format are increasingly scarce, especially with intact inscriptions, portraits, and original fringe.
