wo Korwar-Design Wooden Spoons – Yapen Island, Papua
A fine pair of wooden spoons from Yapen Island, Papua, carved in the distinctive Korwar style. The handles are surmounted by stylised ancestral figures with characteristic Korwar features, reflecting the long tradition of ancestor veneration in the region.
The spoons are well balanced and carefully carved from a dense, dark hardwood, showing smooth handling patina consistent with age and use. The Korwar imagery, traditionally associated with protective ancestral spirits, gives these everyday objects a strong ritual and symbolic presence beyond their utilitarian function.
Collected in the 1980s. Good overall condition, with minor wear consistent with age. An attractive and authentic pair, well suited for collectors of Papuan ethnographic art or as a refined addition to an Oceanic collection.
