Noh面具 - 木, 高品质木雕能面具 - Sankōjō三光尉 - Sankōjō三光尉
High-quality Japanese traditional hand carved wooden Noh mask - Sankōjō三光尉, finely carved with meticulous treatment details, artist name 能円 was signed on the backside.
It is said that the mask was named after Sankobo, a monk from Heisenji Temple in Echizen, who created it around the end of the Muromachi period. Another theory is that the mask was named Sankojo because it was created by being illuminated by three lights (the sun god, the moon god, and the star god). It is mainly used for the old man in the first leading role in Shura Noh plays (second act), such as fishermen, woodcutters, and other commoner roles.
