药柜 (kusuri’dansu) - Keayaki硬木,铁 - 日本 - 江户时代后半期(19世纪上半叶)

A fantastic hardwooden apothecary cabinet 薬箪笥 (kusuri’dansu) fitted with no less than 50 drawers. The cabinet has been fully restored, cleaned, and waxed. The cabinet is crafted from Keyaki hardwood, which is rare for apothecary cabinets. Finished in a warm brown color that has developed a warm, appealing aged patina over time. Each drawer is fitted with a circular iron ring with a rope as handle. The 2 lower drawers are adorned with ‘warabite’-shaped bail handles paired with two small circular lock plates. The drawers are generously deep and run smoothly. Period: Japan – Second half Edo period (first half 19th century) Dimensions: Height 69.4 cm, Width 68 cm, Depth 23 cm In a very good, completely restored condition with minor traces of wear consistent with age. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. Apothecary chests were used by doctors and teahouses to store medicinal ingredients and remedies. They are also known as hyakumi-dansu (“hundred flavors chest”) for their many compartments to sort traditional medicines, or hyakume-dansu (“hundred eyes chest”) due to the rows of round handles that resemble watchful eyes. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity. Please note: Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
