Natural Nerikomi Flower Vase - Sculptural Bizen Masterpiece - 石器, 粘土 - 横山直樹 Yokoyama Naoki (b. 1970) - 日本 - 1900-2000

Item Description This exceptional Bizen vase showcases the remarkable natural nerikomi technique by Yokoyama Naoki 横山直樹 Yokoyama Naoki (b. 1970), a distinguished contemporary Bizen ceramist known for his innovative approach to traditional pottery. The piece demonstrates Yokoyama's masterful command of the shizen nerikomi (natural marbling) method, where different clay compositions are intentionally left unmixed, creating organic, flowing patterns reminiscent of fine handmade Japanese paper. The vase features an elegant elongated form with a distinctive sculptural quality. The natural clay body exhibits beautiful variations in texture and color achieved through the traditional climbing kiln firing process, which lasted 10-12 days using only Japanese red pine as fuel. The surface displays subtle gradations from warm earth tones to deeper fired areas, with the natural nerikomi technique creating a rich, tactile quality that invites closer inspection. Yokoyama studied under master potter Kawabata Fumio after completing his training at the Bizen Pottery Center. He established his independent kiln in Kako, Bizen City in 2000 and has since received numerous accolades including recognition at the Tanabe Art Museum's Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition and the Okayama Prefecture Art Exhibition. His works are characterized by a harmonious balance between contemporary sculptural sensibility and the rustic warmth inherent to Bizen ware. This vase comes with its original wooden box (tomobako), artist's certificate, and protective cloth, all confirming authenticity. The piece represents an excellent example of contemporary Bizen pottery that honors centuries-old traditions while bringing fresh artistic vision to the medium. Size Height: 18 cm Width: 27 cm Depth: 12 cm Weight 2393 g / 2.4 kg Condition The vase is in excellent condition with no damage, scratches, or restoration. Artist Profile Yokoyama Naoki 横山直樹 Yokoyama Naoki (b. 1970) was born in Osafune, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture, as the second son of Bizen potter Yokoyama Shusui. Captivated by the mystique of ceramics from an early age, he enrolled at the Bizen Pottery Center in 1991 after graduating from high school. In 1992, he began his apprenticeship under the renowned Bizen master Kawabata Fumio, where he developed his distinctive approach to the natural nerikomi technique. In 2000, Yokoyama established his own kiln in Kako, Bizen City, marking the beginning of his independent career. His work is distinguished by the use of natural nerikomi, a labor-intensive process that preserves the varied mineral compositions within Bizen clay in their natural state rather than homogenizing them. This technique creates pieces with remarkable depth and organic beauty, often compared to the texture of high-quality handmade washi paper. Throughout his career, Yokoyama has received numerous honors, including selections for the Tanabe Art Museum's Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition (1994, 2001), the Okayama Prefecture Art Exhibition (1997, 1998, 1999 Encouragement Prize, 2000 Encouragement Prize), and the Japan Traditional Crafts Chugoku Branch Exhibition (1998, 1999, 2000). His works are celebrated for their sculptural forms that, while contemporary in aesthetic, retain an approachable warmth and nostalgia characteristic of traditional Bizen ware.
