Japanese Traditional Carpentry Tools

Yariganna (Spear Plane) – Woodworking Blades, Set of 3

This lot consists of three traditional Japanese woodworking tools that were actually used in Japan.
The set includes Yariganna (spear planes), characterized by their spear-shaped blades, each fitted with a wooden handle and a forged steel blade. These tools represent a uniquely Japanese form of traditional carpentry equipment.

About the Yariganna (Important)

The Yariganna is a traditional Japanese woodworking tool featuring a long wooden handle and a curved, willow-leaf-shaped blade resembling a spear tip.
It is considered a tool native to Japan and is believed to have existed since at least the Yayoi period, becoming widely used by the Asuka period. Before the introduction of the modern flat plane (dai-ganna) in the 16th century, the yariganna—along with axes and adzes (chōna)—was one of the principal tools used in Japanese woodworking.

Yariganna were primarily used in the finishing stage after rough shaping, leaving a distinctive rippled texture (known as a wave-like surface) on the wood. This finish enhances the natural grain, texture, and aroma of the wood.
It is traditionally said that yariganna finishing was used on the pillars of Hōryū-ji Temple, one of Japan’s oldest surviving wooden structures.

Typical uses include:
• Hollowing and shaping curved surfaces such as wooden mortars (usu)
• Finishing wooden surfaces after rough cutting
• Production of barrels, tubs, and chests (as a preliminary plane)
• Noh mask carving, traditional architecture, and contemporary furniture making

The tool is generally used by pulling it toward the user, though it may also be pushed depending on the situation, often involving body movement using the legs and waist.
While structurally simple, maintaining a flat and true blade back requires advanced sharpening skills.
