While rooted in the Mashiko tradition, Sakata pursues a unique aesthetic through his distinctive Shinjin-mon (Deep Pattern) design, characterised by deeply carved surface textures that emphasise the raw strength of the clay. The piece has been fired using a high-temperature carbonisation process, producing the rich black tone that distinguishes it from typical Mashiko ware. The surface is enhanced with expressive silver and gold decoration, creating a striking visual contrast between the two metallic hues. Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture. Known for its earthy texture, generous thickness, and warm tactile quality, it is one of Japan’s most beloved traditional ceramics, valued for its rustic charm and durability. Formed as a single flat slab supported by four small legs, this object highlights both sculptural presence and refined craftsmanship. The underside bears the artist’s seal mark. Jinnai Sakata studied under Shoji Kamoda in 1964 and established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. His career has been marked by extensive exhibitions in Japan and abroad, as well as creative exploration beyond pottery, including works in paper, glass, and lighting.
