Mashiko ware, produced around Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture since the late Edo period, is known for its earthy clay body, generous thickness, and warm, rustic tactility. Here, Sakata enhances the natural clay surface with a deeply carved pattern that emphasises the powerful texture of the material. One piece is fired in natural tones, while the other is fired in a high-temperature carbonising atmosphere to achieve an unusually dark, charcoal-black body; such black carbon-fired works remain relatively rare within Mashiko ware and give the pair a striking contrast. Sakata studied under Shoji Kamoda in 1964 and established his own kiln in Mashiko in 1966. He has exhibited widely in Japan and abroad, exploring black pottery alongside paper, glass, lighting, and other media. This lot comes with the original exhibition pamphlet from 2014, which details the event where these works were presented (see photo). The base of each vase bears the artist’s signature. Water seeps out from the side of the clay body, so if used as vases they should be fitted with an inner container. Minor blemishes and signs of use are present, but they remain in good used condition. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx. H 29.5 cm W 8.5 cm D 5.8-6.2 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
