According to the Glenmorangie Company, the earliest record of alcohol production at Morangie Farm dates back to 1703. In the 1730s, a brewery was built on the land from which the farm's water was drawn, from the Tarlogie Spring. Former distillery manager William Matheson acquired the farm in 1843 and converted the Morangie brewery into a distillery, equipped with two second-hand stills. He later changed the distillery's name to Glenmorangie. In 1918, the distillery was purchased by its main client, Macdonald and Muir of Leith.
