Natsume 棗 金色日出鹤平卷漆 - 木, 金色, 漆 - Nakade Shoho(中出松峰) - 日本 - 昭和年代(1926-1989)

Nakade Shoho(中出松峰) "Sunrise Crane Maki-e Flat Natsume" This work, "Sunrise Crane Maki-e Flat Natsume," is by maki-e artist Nakade Shoho. This glossy black lacquer natsume is adorned with a vibrant vermilion lacquer, and features a powerfully soaring crane painted in gold maki-e. This design is more than just decorative; it embodies the highest level of celebratory sentiment in Japanese culture. In Japan, cranes have long been considered symbols of longevity, nobility, immortality, and spirit. This motif overlaps with the rising sun. "Dawn, new beginnings, rebirth and hope, and the sun as a symbol of the nation." These two elements combine to create this piece, which is imbued with a celebratory design beyond compare. It is truly a piece conceived as a natsume to celebrate life's milestones, new beginnings, success, and longevity. The crane's feathers, painted in gold, emerge from the deep darkness of the black lacquer. Looking closely, the sharpness of the wingtips, the volume of the body, and the sense of speed embodied in the spread of the wings are all expressed with great precision. Even more noteworthy are the varying particle sizes of the gold powder used on the crane's body, and the eye-catching accents of mother-of-pearl (raden/shell). Depending on the angle of the light, the flapping wings appear to sparkle for a moment. This is an expression that only a skilled maki-e artist could achieve. The flat natsume is a tea utensil used when preparing thin tea. The very gesture of handling it creates a "performance" that is seen by guests. The moment the lid is removed, the golden crane appears dancing in a world of red, ensuring a "momentary moment of emotion at the tea ceremony."
