Hagi ware, famous for its tea ware (pottery for use in the tea ceremony), was developed as the official kiln of the Mori clan, who ruled the two provinces of Suo and Nagato during the Edo period. Its history dates back to 1592, the first year of Bunroku, over 400 years ago.
Hagi ware is characterized by its unique soft texture, achieved by using rough, loosely fired clay.
The coarse clay has high permeability, water retention, and heat retention, and the difference in shrinkage rates between the clay and glaze allows moisture to seep through tiny cracks (crazing) on the surface, reaching the surface from within the vessel.
Due to this penetration, the color of the vessel gradually changes with use, exuding an indescribable sense of wabi-sabi.
This change is called the "Seven Changes of Hagi," and is a distinctive charm of Hagi ware.
Hagi ware is often made in a simple style that makes the most of the texture of the clay, and is rarely decorated with painting or other such elements.
Its unique character is created by the clay mixture, the amount of glaze applied, spatula and brush marks, and the accidental effects of the flames during firing.
